2 couples from Round Lake decided to start a vineyard 4-5 years ago. This year was the second year they could pick.
They ask for volunteers and give a dollar amount back based on the pounds you pick. Our Relay for Life team got involved this year. Lots of groups come out for different fundraisers to help pick.
The girls and I got up and headed to the vineyard at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11. It was a beautiful morning. They were very excited and so was I to see what this was all about. We got the instructions, got our handy, dandy tool to use and started. We had totes to drop the grapes in once we cut them off. The tools we used were so handy even Presley and Madison could help. The girls lasted about a 1/2 hour and were bored. They were excited to eat some...but their legs were getting tired. Jason was busy doing house stuff that a.m., so I didn't want to bother him (I did try to call him about a dozen times to find out later his cell phone was in the house being charged). So, thank goodness for car dvd players...they watched an entire movie and played in the car while I picked. There were kids that came around in gators to empty the totes and compile all the grapes we were picking.
We got done around noon. We made it through around 20 rows down and back. The owners prepared a great meal. We ate, had some wine samples, and called it a day. The owners sell the grapes to winery's once they are all picked. This year they were bringing them to a place by Alexandria. Last year they sold them to a winery just south into Iowa called Little Swan Lake Winery. I've been there before and it is such a neat place to tour!
All in all, it was a good time! I'm glad I participated. I now know what grape picking is really all about! Check out a couple pictures below of our adventure!
